Thomas the Tortoise's Playground Race
At the Sunny Downs playground, lived Thomas the Tortoise. He was a calm and steady fellow who loved to explore every nook and cranny at his own slow pace. Each day, he’d take his time, admiring the bright red slide, the wobbly swings, and the big, sandy pit. He knew the best spots for a quiet sunbathe and the fastest way to roll down a small grassy hill.
One sunny morning, Harold the Hare, who was super speedy and loved to zoom around, bounced over. “Hello, Thomas!” Harold chirped, hopping impatiently. “I bet I could race you around the whole playground and win with my eyes closed! What do you say?”
Thomas paused, thinking carefully. He wasn't as fast as Harold, but he was always persistent. “Alright, Harold,” he said in his usual calm voice. “Let’s race to the big blue climbing frame and back. Slow and steady steps versus fast hops, let’s see!” All the forest friends gathered, chattering excitedly, ready to watch the big race.
“On your marks, get set, GO!” shouted Sammy the Squirrel. Harold zipped off in a flash, a blur of fur and bouncing feet, laughing loudly as he quickly disappeared from sight. Thomas, however, just started with his usual, calm, slow and steady steps. Left foot, right foot, one step, then another. He knew his pace, but a tiny worry wiggled in his shell when Harold was nowhere to be seen.
Thomas kept going, focusing on his steady steps. One foot in front of the other, he remembered. When he rounded the big oak tree, he saw Harold! Harold wasn't racing at all; he was bouncing a shiny bouncy ball, giggling as it zoomed high into the air. Harold had forgotten all about the race! Thomas just smiled, stayed calm, and kept taking his slow and steady steps towards the finish line.
Harold, surprised, looked up from his bouncy ball. “Wait, Thomas, you’re almost there!” he cried, but it was too late. With one last calm, persistent step, Thomas crossed the finish line! The forest friends cheered loudly, clapping their paws and wings. Thomas felt warm and proud. Harold ran over, a little sheepish. “You won, Thomas! Your slow and steady steps really did win the race!”
From that day on, everyone at the Sunny Downs playground remembered Thomas the Tortoise’s lesson: whether you’re bouncing a ball or racing a friend, being calm, persistent, and taking one steady step at a time can help you achieve anything. Thomas continued to enjoy his playground, knowing that his quiet efforts truly made a difference.
