The Shimmering Shadows of the Sea
Deep beneath the waves, Maya and I were giggling in our cozy coral bedroom. Our room was usually filled with the soft, blue glow of tiny sea snails and shimmering anemones. Maya, with her bright yellow fins and endless questions, was busy organizing her shell collection while I tucked my favorite seaweed blanket under my chin, feeling safe in our watery home.
But as the ocean sun set far above the surface, our bioluminescent lights began to dim. The bright blues turned into deep purples, and then, the corners of the room grew black. I saw a jagged, reaching hand stretching across my bed. 'Maya, look!' I whispered, my heart thumping like a drum against my ribs. 'There is a sea-monster shadow coming for us!'
Maya swam closer to the shadow, her eyes wide with curiosity rather than fear. 'It is just a shape, Flora,' she said, reaching out her hand. I squeezed my eyes shut, then forced them open, using all my courage to swim toward the dark corner. I reached out and touched the 'monster hand.' It was not scaly or sharp; it was just the soft, swaying leaf of a giant kelp plant blocking a tiny bit of light.
I let out a long breath, and the bubbles tickled my nose as they floated up. The scary monster was just a plant! We spent the next few minutes pointing at other shadowsâa 'giant shark' was just a round rock, and a 'ghostly face' was only a sleeping pufferfish. I realized the darkness did not bring anything scary into the room; it just hid the things I already knew and loved.
I settled back into my bed, feeling brave and tired. Maya yawned and curled up in her soft hammock nearby. The darkness was not a place for monsters anymore; it was just a quiet blanket that helped us rest. I closed my eyes, listening to the gentle hum of the ocean, and fell into a deep, peaceful sleep.
