The Sandcastle Engineer

The golden sand at Sunray Cove was warm beneath nine-year-old Bob’s toes. Bob was a clever boy who loved figuring out how things worked, and today he was sketching a blueprint for a grand sand fort in the damp sand. The salty breeze carried the sound of crashing waves and the distant cry of seagulls. It was a perfect day for a project, yet Bob kept glancing at a boy his age sitting just a few feet away with his own bucket and spade.

The other boy was busy piling wet sand into a tall, wobbly tower. He seemed to love building just as much as Bob did. Bob felt a flutter of shyness in his chest, making his hands feel heavy. He wanted to say hello, but he was not sure how to start. He watched as the boy struggled to keep the tower from tilting toward the incoming tide, but his shyness kept him rooted to his spot.

Suddenly, a large wave surged forward, threatening to wash away the bottom of the other boy's tower. Bob’s smart mind immediately saw the problem: the tower needed a drainage system. Forgetting his shyness for a moment, he grabbed his plastic spade and rushed over. 'If we dig a trench at a forty-five-degree angle,' Bob explained quickly, 'the water will flow around the base instead of hitting it!'

The boy looked up, surprised, and then a bright smile broke across his face. Together, they dug quickly, following Bob’s smart plan just as the next wave hissed toward them. The water swirled into the new trench, safely bypassing the sand tower. They both let out a huge sigh of relief and then burst into laughter. The shyness had vanished, replaced by the joy of a shared victory as they shook hands.

By the time the sun began to dip low, the two boys had built an entire sand city complete with bridges and tunnels. They talked and joked like they had been friends for years. Bob realized that being smart was not just about solving puzzles; it was a great way to make a new friend. As they waved goodbye, Bob felt proud of his ideas and happy for the new companion he had found by the sea.
