Flora and the Tower of Sand

The sun was a warm hug on Flora’s shoulders as she skipped across the sparkly sand. The beach was her favorite place, filled with the salty smell of the ocean and the rhythmic sound of waves going swish-wash, swish-wash. Flora was a kind girl who always made sure to step carefully so she wouldn't disturb the tiny crabs scurrying toward the water.

Today, Flora had a very big plan. She wanted to build the tallest sand tower the beach had ever seen! She used her bright yellow bucket to scoop up wet, heavy sand, patting it down firmly with her small hands. High and higher the tower went, decorated with shiny purple seashells and a single white feather she found near the dunes. She worked so hard, humming a happy tune as her masterpiece grew tall and proud.

Suddenly, a rogue wave rushed up the shore, much further than the others. With a loud splash and a soggy thud, Flora’s beautiful tower crumbled into a pile of wet mush. Her heart began to beat fast, and her face felt very hot. She felt a giant wave of anger rising inside her, just like the ocean. She wanted to stomp her feet and yell at the sea for breaking her hard work.

Flora took a very deep breath, just like her mom had taught her. She closed her eyes and listened to the waves, matching her breathing to their slow rhythm. She realized the ocean didn't mean to be mean; it was just being the ocean. Being kind meant being patient with herself, too. She let the hot, mad feelings wash away with the retreating tide, feeling her muscles relax as she let out a long, calm sigh.

With a peaceful heart, Flora picked up her yellow bucket again. She saw a younger boy nearby looking sadly at his own small mound of sand. 'Would you like to help me build a new one?' she asked with a kind smile. Together, they started to build an even bigger castle, laughing as the sand squished between their toes. Flora learned that towers might fall, but kindness always stands tall.
