Fernando's Wave-Proof Wonder
Fernando loved the beach more than anywhere. The sand was like warm sugar under his toes, and the air smelled salty and sweet. His favorite thing to do was build, and today he was building the most magnificent sandcastle in the whole world. It had tall, swirly towers and a deep, wide moat, perfect for a sand king.
But as Fernando patted the last tower, he saw a problem. The ocean was creeping closer! Swish, swoosh, the waves slid up the sand, getting nearer and nearer to his castle. A big, foamy wave was rolling in, and it looked hungry for his masterpiece! The moat he dug wasn't going to be enough to stop it.
Quick as a crab, Fernando started building a wall. He scooped and piled sand, trying to make it higher and stronger. "Higher, higher, higher!" he puffed. But the dry sand just crumbled and slid down. "Oh no, oh no, oh no!" he worried, as the wall fell apart again. A little bit of frustration began to bubble up inside him.
Just as he was about to give up, Fernando stopped and looked around. His problem-solving eyes spotted treasures scattered on the sand: long, leathery strands of seaweed and smooth, heavy stones. An idea sparked! He loved trying new things! Instead of just sand, he wove the strong seaweed through the wall and packed the heavy stones at the bottom. When the big wave finally crashed, it hit his new sea-wall and... whoosh! It split in two, flowing right around his safe and sound castle. "It worked!" he shouted with joy.
The castle was safe! And it looked even more beautiful, decorated with its seaweed weaving and stony base. Other kids gathered to see his amazing invention. Fernando felt a warm glow of pride. He learned that even when your first idea doesn't work, a creative solution is often hiding right in front of you, just waiting to be built.
