Benjamin and the Cosmic Catcher
Benjamin, a super creative six-year-old, loved his backyard more than anything. It wasn't just a backyard to him; it was his very own 'Science Command Centre'! Today, his most prized possession, the 'Cosmic Catcher 3000', was ready for its next big mission.
The Cosmic Catcher 3000 was a shiny, silver gadget with a bright red button and springy arms that could launch small, soft balls super high. Benjamin imagined he was a space explorer, launching satellites into orbit right from his Command Centre.
“Three, two, one, blast off!” Benjamin yelled, pressing the red button with a triumphant grin. WHIZZ! The ball zoomed upwards, higher than it had ever gone before, a tiny speck against the big blue Australian sky.
But instead of coming back down into his waiting hands, the Cosmic Catcher's ball landed with a soft THUD right on top of the garden shed roof! Oh dear! It was too high to reach, even on his tiptoes.
Benjamin jumped and stretched, reaching with all his might. “Come on, Cosmic Catcher!” he called. But the roof was slippery and steep, and the little ball stayed put. A tiny frown appeared on Benjamin’s face. What was a scientist to do?
He paced around his Science Command Centre, looking at all his 'equipment'. There was his trusty broom, a long piece of string he’d found, and an old, colourful bucket. Suddenly, Benjamin’s eyes lit up with a brilliant idea! He wouldn't give up; he'd invent a solution!
“Aha!” he exclaimed. “I need a ‘Gravity Grabber Mark Two’!” Benjamin carefully tied the string to the broom handle. Then, he secured the old bucket to the end of the string, making a sort of long, wobbly scoop.
It took a few tries. He carefully pushed the broom up, wiggling the bucket towards the edge of the roof. WHOOSH! The bucket swung, just missing the ball. Benjamin didn't get disheartened. He adjusted his aim, concentrating hard, like a true rocket scientist.
He pushed the broom again, a little higher, a little steadier. The bucket wiggled closer, closer... and then, with a gentle nudge, the Cosmic Catcher ball rolled right into the bucket! Benjamin held his breath.
Slowly, ever so slowly, Benjamin lowered his Gravity Grabber Mark Two. The ball tumbled safely into his hands! “Hooray!” he cheered, a wide, happy smile spreading across his face. He had done it! His creative thinking had saved the day!
Benjamin knew then that being creative was just like being a scientist. You observe, you think, you experiment, and you don’t give up! He hugged his Cosmic Catcher 3000 tightly.
From that day on, Benjamin not only launched his Cosmic Catcher, but he also thought up new 'inventions' for all sorts of backyard adventures, proving that a clever mind is the best tool of all in any Science Command Centre.
